Searching the tracks

Every route was resampled to a point every 10 m, then cut into stretches from 300 m up to the whole route. That is about scored stretches per letter, across all 26 letters.

Two judges

The shape score measures how far the stretch strays from a drawn letter, upper or lower case, and how much of the letter it misses. A handwriting model trained on about 125,000 handwritten letters then has to read it as the letter with at least 90% confidence.

Bigger is better

Candidates are ranked by shape − 0.05 × share of route, so a letter that is most of its route can beat a slightly cleaner fragment. No two picks for a letter cover the same ground.
